1 in every 8 women has a chance of developing breast cancer.
Breast cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the breast. Breast cancer cells usually form a tumor that can often be seen on an x-ray or felt as a lump.
While breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women from all over the world, there can be breast lumps which are non-cancerous in nature. In other words, not all lumps in the breasts are breast cancers.
Doctors estimate that about 5-10 percent of breast cancer cases are linked to family history and are passed through genes to next generations.
Self examination is the best way to detect breast cancer. Some 40 percent of breast cancers are discovered by women, during breast self-exams.

Tahira Kashyap, Indian writer, director and wife of actor Ayushmann Khurrana, is a brave #breastcancer warrior.
Tahira was diagnosed with breast #cancer in 2018.
What followed was painful sessions of #chemotherapy, medication, #mastectomy and reconstruction. But, she fought like a warrior.
Tahira doesn't appreciate the word 'cancer survivor.'
"We (cancer patients) do whatever we can to the best of our ability. Some of us make it, some don’t. That doesn’t mean there’s any reward or medal for those people. The biggest reward for anyone who’s been through this ordeal and emerged from it is life itself, that’s the biggest boon," says Tahira.
Here's the story of Tahira Kashyap, one of the many brave cancer warriors.

Finding what you think is a sign of breast cancer can send you into a freak-out spiral. While it’s normal to be scared, don’t be so worried that you ignore it hoping to get well with time.
Fortunately, the outlook for women with breast cancer is improving constantly. Due to increased awareness, opportunities for early detection, and treatment advances, survival rates continue to climb.
To cure the disease at an early stage, it is most important that you know the warning signs and symptoms.
- A lump in the breast or underarm area
- Changes in breast shape and size
- Sudden discharge from the nipple
- A sore or rash on the nipple
- Swelling, redness, or darkening of the breast
- Inversion of the nipple
If you observe any of these, visit your doctor without any delay.
